Elementary Faith Formation News

The Elementary Faith Formation classes have participated in many different Lenten activities. Classes buried the Alleluias and walked the Stations of the Cross. Many baked pretzels or bread, and made Sacrament of Intitation or Baptismal candles. All classes have been busy learning their prayers and signing the prayer posters in the Faith Formation hallway.

Tuesday evening classes enjoyed a visit from Deacon Jim to learn about Adoration. Father Tony visited the Wednesday afternoon classes. The Wednesday afternoon 4th and 5th grade classes made trail mix and popcorn bags to donate to Kids Food Basket. Wednesay evening classes attended the Puppet Extravagnza Show. During Faith Friends, middle school Urgency performed a skit on the Our Father and helped the 1st and 2nd grade students make an Our Father booklet.

The lenten season concluded with a Journey through Holy Week gym night.

Elementary Faith Formation Information

While there is no fee for Elementary Faith Formation, registration is required. Registration forms will only be available at the parent orientation sessions. The determination of which session your child is in is based on a "first come - first served" basis during registration. When a class is filled in a particular session, no more students will be accepted into that class in order to keep a quality program. If you have any questions you may call the Faith Formation office at 866-2577.

Classes begin on Tuesday, September 20 and Wednesday, September 21 and conclude Tuesday, April 24, 2012 and Wednesday, April 25, 2012. Grades 1 through 5 will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings.

  1. Session I - 4:30 PM to 5:45 PM
  2. Session II - 6:15 PM to 7:30 PM

To ensure that the beliefs of our faith are introduced and reinforced for the young people as they grow, develop, and mature as Catholics the Faith First curriculum has been chosen. Our Catholic faith tradition and its foundational elements are the basis of the scope and sequence of Faith First . The doctrinal content is organized according to the four pillars of the Catechism of the Catholic Church - Creed, Sacraments, Morality, and Prayer.

Catechist Information

Catechists are needed for all elementary faith formation classes' grades 1-5 during all class sessions. No teaching experience is needed; just a desire and commitment to pass along our catholic faith. If you would like more information on volunteering please contact the faith formation office.

Catechists training meetings will be held on August 30, 2011 from 6:30PM - 8:00PM and on September 14, 2011 at 6:30PM - 8:00PM.

All volunteers are required to attend Virtus training which will be held at OLC on September 10, 2011 at 9:00AM.

Instructional Services

Each week the students work with one lesson from the textbook. Additional activity pages, crafts, or other special projects often accompany the book work. During the year we will have opportunities to gather together for special programs. Students can look forward to music, prayer and celebrations. In November students will have the opportunity to discover the saints. In December we will have an Advent program. During Lent, students will participate in the Stations of the Cross as well as a Lenten program. There will be an end of the year celebration with a May crowning.

Prayers

Catechists will assign prayers to be learned according to the diocesan curriculum guidelines. The help of parents will insure success with this activity. Once prayers are memorized, children will be able to participate more fully in our community worship. Each childs text contains the prayers a Catholic child should know.

Service

All Christians are called to care for their neighbors needs. Catholic social teachings are integrated throughout the curriculum. Through their classes children may participate in several of our parish outreach efforts.

A few of the opportunities include writing letters to men and women in the military, decorating holiday cards for residents at Bishop Hills and shut-ins, and decorating lunch bags for God's Kitchen Meals on Wheels. Other possibilities for community service involve collection of food and clothing for North Kent Community Services, or collecting diapers for Help Pregnancy Crisis Aid Center.

Special Education

Some of our parish children have special educational needs. If parents have made our office aware of these needs, proper placement can be determined which will most benefit the child. In some cases, regular Religious Education teachers simply need to be appraised of reading difficulties, medical problems, or behavioral techniques that are more effective than others. Students with more challenging special needs meet weekly for 30-minute classes. The curriculum is specially selected to fit their needs. These students join the regular Faith Formation groupings whenever appropriate. They may be prepared for reception of the sacraments as readiness is discerned.
